Principal place address proof got rejected
The officer rejected principal place proof. Match rent agreement, NOC, and tax or electricity receipt names with the GST form. Re-upload on the portal.
The landlord's file is on the billing table: agreement, a few receipts, a NOC written on notebook paper. The GST application came back with a query or a reject on principal place of business. You thought any paper with the shop address would do. The officer thought otherwise. Closing time is the wrong time to discover that the pin code on the form and the pin code on the agreement are not the same.
Principal place of business is the address GST treats as your main location on the registration. It is not "wherever the stock is this week." Proof must show that you occupy that place, in a name that ties to the applicant, with documents the portal list allows. A reject is usually a mismatch, a blurry scan, or a paper that proves someone else's possession.
What the form means by principal place
In Part B of registration (or later in amendment), you enter address line, locality, district, state, pin. That block must match the proof. Path for a new file: gst.gov.in → Services > Registration > New Registration (TRN login) → Principal Place of Business. Path if you already have GSTIN and are fixing address: Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields (address of principal place is typically core) — confirm the label on your screen, because core versus non-core decides whether an officer must approve.
If you applied new and got a query, open Services > User Services > My Applications, open the ARN, read the query. Re-upload there. Do not start a fresh TRN unless the old application is dead.
Rent agreement, NOC, and whose name is printed
If you are a tenant, the usual set is a rent / lease agreement plus identity of the landlord and often a NOC from the landlord that the premises may be used for business and for GST registration. The agreement should be readable: parties, address, period, signatures. A one-line chit "shop given on rent" with no address and no date is why files bounce.
Name mismatch: the GST applicant is "Sunita Devi" (proprietor). The agreement is in the husband's name only, and there is no link. The officer is not required to assume family. Add a clear NOC and, if needed, a document that shows why Sunita occupies the shop. Do not Photoshop a name onto an old agreement. That is a false document.
If the agreement expired last year, renew it or get a current NOC plus a valid occupancy paper. Do not upload 2019 pages and hope.
For owned premises, sale deed / property tax receipt in the applicant's name is the usual story. If the property is in a parent's name and the shop is the child's, you need a NOC and a consistent story on the form. Get local help for the exact combination your ward accepts. This article will not invent a deed.
Electricity or property tax receipt — only as GST address proof
The portal list often allows a copy of a recent electricity bill, municipal tax receipt, or similar, as one of the address proofs. Use it only to show the address of the principal place. This is not a guide to paying any utility. Scan the page where the address and consumer name are visible.
If the electricity connection is in the landlord's name, that can still support the address of the building, but you still need the rent agreement / NOC that you are the occupant. If the connection is in a previous tenant's name, expect a reject. Get the landlord to put current papers in order.
If the receipt address says "Shop 2, Gandhi Market" and your form says "Gandi Market" with a missing 'h', fix the form or explain. Pin code errors are a frequent silent reject.
Do not upload a bill for a house in another ward because "it is the same family." Principal place is the business place you declared.
How to re-upload without guessing
- Read the reject / query line word for word.
- Make a checklist: form address, agreement address, receipt address, NOC address.
- Scan in colour, pages straight, file size under the portal limit, PDF if asked.
- File name something you can recognise later.
- Upload in the correct slot: principal place proof, not "authorisation" slot.
- Submit the query reply on My Applications. Save acknowledgement.
If the application was fully rejected, you apply again with a clean set. Keep the old ARN number in a notebook so you do not mix stories.
Photos of the shop front with the board and the street are sometimes asked. Take them in daylight. The board trade name should not wildly disagree with the form (trade name fights belong to a different amendment, but a totally different board raises doubt).
Core amendment if GSTIN already exists
Changing principal place after you are registered is not a casual edit. It is often a core field amendment: Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields. Officer approval is needed. You will upload similar proofs again. Until approved, do not print the new address on invoices as if it were already live, and do not ignore the old place if stock still sits there — additional place of business is the correct tool for a second location.
Check this month's official date only if you are looking at a processing timeline published for amendments. Neighbour timelines are not law.
While the amendment is pending, keep filing returns on the existing GSTIN. Address fight does not pause GSTR-3B. Check this month's official date for the return due date as usual.
Shop-floor mistakes
Uploading only the first page of a five-page agreement. Password-protected PDF the officer cannot open. WhatsApp-compressed images that look like green fog. NOC without date or landlord ID. Address in English on the form and only local-language proof with no overlapping words the officer can match. Get a translation or a bilingual agreement if your ward needs it.
If a consultant uploads from a city cyber cafe, sit with them and watch the slots. You own the reject.
FAQ
They rejected a valid rent agreement. What do I add?
Usually a NOC, ID of landlord, and a recent occupancy proof such as a property tax or electricity receipt for that same address, plus clearer scans. Match names. Do not fake a new agreement date.
Can I use a friend's shop address to get GSTIN faster?
No. That is a false principal place. Do not evade. Register the place you actually use, or add an additional place later with its own proofs.
Principal place reject — should I change the address to my home?
Only if the business actually runs from home and home proofs match. Switching to a random home address to pass the officer is still a false statement if the shop is elsewhere.
Where do I see the reject reason?
Services > User Services > My Applications and Track Application Status. Download the order or query. The reason is there, not in the SMS alone.
GST Atka is not a GSTN office. File on gst.gov.in. Rules change. Do not evade tax. Personal case: get local help.
